VAn Nguyen

Van (pronounced Von) is co-Founder of CrossFit MSP (CrossFit Minneapolis, St. Paul), along with husband, Michael. A former tennis player and runner...lots and lots of running, she always had a passion for fitness. That is, until she had to have back surgery due to a hereditary degeneration in her low back, which led to a herniated disk. Doctors told her she had to find a new sport that would have less of an impact on the spine. She tried those, but became bored with the routine. She then discovered CrossFit. Due to its scalability and emphasis on functional movements, recovery was slow, but within a year and a half of doing CrossFit, recovery was a complete success.

A devotee of CrossFit since 2007, she is living proof of its physical adaptation and benefits that CrossFit produces. She believes very strongly that everyone, regardless of athletic abilities, can benefit greatly from CrossFit. She loves the energy, the people, the environment, and the positive impact that CrossFit brings to people’s lives.

Van holds degrees in Accounting and Economics. She enjoyed a successful career as a Finance Executive before switching gears and taking on her current role in Business Technology.

Van holds the following Certifications:

  • CrossFit Level I
  • CrossFit Basic Barbell with Mark Rippetoe
  • CrossFit Olympic Weightlifting with Mike Burgener
  • CrossFit Nutrition with Robb Wolf
  • CrossFit Gymnastics with Jeff Tucker
  • CrossFit Endurance

  • FMS Functional Movement Certified Specialist with Brett Jones
  • CPR/AED Certified - 2009 and 2010

Jon Thorland

As an endurance athlete, he has competed in a number of different races, discovering CrossFit while training for the Twin Cities Marathon. The last two months of his training consisted of mostly CrossFit WODs (workouts of the day) and very little distance running, counter to traditional endurance training metholodogies. In fact he ran the Twin Cities Marathon, and credits his best marathon finish time to date to his CrossFit training. He fully credits the GPP (general physical preparedness) gained through CrossFit with giving him the fitness level to finish.

Jon is excited to show how training in the
methodology of CrossFit can help one achieve goals in their chosen sport. After years spent as an endurance athlete, he is a recent convert to understanding the importance of strength above all else in physical fitness. Nothing bums him out more than seeing people log hours and hours on treadmills and elliptical machines.

Jon holds a degree in physics and spends his time outside the gym working for a top aerospace company as a systems engineer. He also has a passion for the outdoors and enjoys spending summers camping, hiking, and fishing.

Jon holds the following Certifications:

  • CrossFit Level I

Alex Henry CrossFit MSP Coach

Alex Henry

Alex is a fitness enthusiast and CrossFit has played a major part in her life since 2008.

Despite being an asthmatic, she has been active since childhood, playing volleyball, cheerleading and synchronized swimming. As an adult, she has continued her pursuit for physical fitness and has a passion for outdoor sports.

What she loves about CrossFit is the challenge, the sense of accomplishment and the camaraderie. She considers it an honor and a joy to work with people and help them reach their full potential.

You can find Alex working with her sales team somewhere in the western half of the US, or you can find her at CrossFit MSP - she’s usually the one in pigtails, wearing something pink, along with a variety of knee high socks and turning up the music when no one is looking.  She’s all about working really hard and having a ton of fun at the same time.

Logan Bautch CrossFit MSP Coach

Logan Bautch

Logan holds a bachelor's degree in art history and philosophy and is currently employed as a corporate recruiter. His early athletic endeavors included recreational downhill ski racing and wake-boarding. While attending Concordia College in Moorhead, MN Logan discovered rugby and the camaraderie of team sports. Logan was selected captain of the Concordia rugby team in his junior year and finished his years with the team as the scrum half (to those who know the sport, at 6'1", Logan was by far the largest scrum half in the league).

Logan discovered CrossFit MSP in 2009 and was instantly drawn to the effectiveness of the programming, the excellent coaching, and the community atmosphere that fosters growth and positivity. Logan is motivated by the culture of self improvement and personal growth cultivated at CrossFit MSP and reflected in our elite level athletes as well as members in their first few sessions at the box.

Logan strives to lead by example and motivates others to achieve their own personal fitness goals through form, consistency, then intensity.

Outside the box, Logan enjoys cycling (road and mountain), skiing, volleyball, and disc-golf. Logan has a passion for music and shares Alex's addiction to loudly colored long socks (gotta protect those shins)! He and wife, Kate, are proud parents of a blue healer named Ramsey and a jalapeno pepper garden.
